Diet and Remedies for Jaundice

The treatment of jaundice generally starts after diagnosing the underlying cause. Jaundice that takes place because of anemia may be treated by increasing the iron levels in the blood with iron supplements or with the consumption of iron rich foods.   • Lemon Juice: Dilute lemon juice with water and drink regularly all through the day. This will assist in protecting the liver cells.
  • Barley Water: Another vastly popular natural jaundice treatment is barley water. Add a cup of barley to about three liters of water and simmer for a couple of hours. Drink this regularly during the day for relief from jaundice.
  • Berberis Vultaris: This herb is also called as jaundice berry and is frequently suggested to those suffering from jaundice. The juice or extract of the herb may be consumed daily.
  • Turmeric: Add a quarter teaspoon of turmeric powder to warm water and drink twice daily.
  • Papaya Leaves: Crush some tender papaya leaves into a paste. Mingle the paste with half a teaspoon of honey and consume.
  • Ginger: Take out the juice from a piece of ginger, mingle with lime juice and mint juice and drink several times a day.
  • Buttermilk: Add a pinch of roasted cumin seeds powder and some salt to buttermilk and consume. This helps in correct digestion and is useful for the liver.
  • Indian Gooseberry: A helpful natural treatment for jaundice, Indian gooseberry may be consumed along with water daily.
  • Oregano: Add a couple of spoons of oregano to a cup of water and carry to a boil. Boil for about ten minutes and then strain. Consume this regularly for relieving jaundice symptoms.

Diet for Jaundice

Appropriate diet and sufficient rest is necessary for recovery from jaundice. Here are a few useful dietary tips for those affected by jaundice:

  • A good intake of fluids assists to get rid of excess bilirubin from the body through the urine and stool. Ensure that you drink clean, uncontaminated water. Vegetable and fruit juices are also useful as they assist to regulate the balance of electrolytes in the body. Keep away from canned juices. Typically a liquid diet is suggested for the first 4 to 5 days. Alcohol should be avoided totally as it can gravely affect the liver.
  • Once the bilirubin levels begin decreasing, light foods for example fruits, porridge and yogurt may be added to the diet. You can also eat vegetables for example spinach and carrots. Some amount of lean protein will assist in recovery and hence you can also eat egg. It is advisable to divide your meals into smaller portions and eat them regularly throughout the day. Abstain from consuming foods that are spicy or oily. sugared foods, caffeine and artificial sweeteners should also be avoided.
  • As the bilirubin levels decrease to nearly normal, you can add foods for instance rice, lentil or fish to your diet. Make sure that no oil is utilized to cook foods. You can eat your fish either boiled or steamed. Avoid eating meat or poultry as it may be hard to digest.
